U13's Cup - Painswick V LRFC Cougars

Well done to the lads on Sunday. That was a tough fixture against an excellent opposition. On a huge pitch with only 11 players available due to some technical issues they performed manfully. The effort was visible for all to see when after the game they all just slumped on the pitch. But they should, genuinely,, not be downhearted about the performance for while th result is, obviously, disappointing the performance was anything but.

We lost Willbo for a while due to a pulled stomach muscle, we dropped Luca into left back and while Willbo recovered which he thankfully did played with 10-men. Painswick by contrast had a squad of 15 available. As the game continued Luca then pulled up with his back getting the better of him but continued to play. So to only lose 3-2 in those circumstances is something to take heart from.

Will.I.Am in goal had a stormer, he was calmness personified making catches from long shots and a stunning save palming the ball away from a brilliantly struck corner. In front of him George used all his tenacity and athleticism to snuff as many attacks as possible with Freddie putting in a very solid shift alongside him in the centre of defence. Using his head and left foot (see all that practice pays off) to make some timley clearances. When we got the ball forward we struggled to support the front players. Sam playing at right back had a solid match in an unfamiliar position. Always dangerous playing crosses from deep he wasn't really able to support the attack as he would normally like such was Painswick pressure.

The first goal came against the run of play but after some nice passing in midfield with Jacob, Harvey, Max, Louis and Daniel all being involved in the build up. The ball was played out to Luca on the right wing, pulling the ball back from the byline he hit a cross-shot the flew over the keepers head into the far corner. 1-0 and in all honestly against the run of play.

Painswick pulled one back scoring from close range after sustained pressure.

Before half time we went back into the lead. A lovely free kick from Jacob going in over the keepers head. 2-1.

The message at half time was to get tighter in midfield. A tactical change saw Daniel drop deeper and Max push up front with Luca and Louis swapping wings. With the Painswick right winger being particularly fast we needed some additional cover on that wing. Painswick equalised early in the half and as the game progressed looked more likely to score. While we were still creating chances on the break we weren't getting that final lucky break or bounce to see us clean through. With around 5 minutes to go Max got through and rolled a shot beyond the keeper that drifted just wide of the far post. Despite a performance packed with commitment it wasn't to be our day.

We have an opportunity to put things right next weekend when we play Painswick again in the County Cup.

Note - i am not sure what has happened with google maps but the address and post code of the pitch was correct but the map pointed to Bisley. I will check links before posting them in foture.
